Black-capped Bulbul
(Rubigula melanictera) The black-capped bulbul, also known as the black-headed yellow bulbul, is a lively endemic bird of Sri Lanka’s wet zone forests and wooded gardens. Instantly recognised by its glossy black head, bright yellow throat, and rich yellow underparts, it moves actively through the mid-canopy in pairs or small groups while giving a series of cheerful bubbling calls. The upperparts are yellowish olive-green, blending well with the foliage, while the brownish tail is neatly tipped in white and often flicked as the bird hops between branches. The male shows striking red irides whereas the female’s eyes are brown. Although generally shy, this bulbul can become surprisingly confiding near fruiting trees, where it feeds on berries, soft fruits, and insects among the forest greenery. 04/01/2026 at Meethirigala Nissarana Forest
