Common Kingfisher
Alcedo atthis
Identification - Small in size. Dark blue crown, white chin, brownish orange patch and a white patch under the eye, brownish orange underparts, blue upperparts - bright blue back and rump and dark blue wings with black borders, blue short tail. Male - Both upper and the lower mandible of the bill is black.
Female - Upper mandible is black while lower mandible is orange.Can be seen near freshwater bodies throughout Sri Lanka.
Nesting - Nest in holes made in the banks of water bodies.
