Coppersmith Barbet


Megalaima haemaccphala

Identification - Small in size, red forehead, light yellow patches around the eye, light yellow chin, large red patch on the chin, under part is grayish yellow with streaks, upper part is dark greenish. Bill is black and feet are red. Sometimes can be confused with the Sri Lanka Small Barbet but can be easily separated by the grayish yellow streaked under part. Both Male and Female are alike. Juveniles are paler than adults. Distributed in Low country Dry Zone. 

Usually present in fruity trees. (Mostly can be seen in North Central Province in Sri Lanka)    

Nesting - Nest in tree holes.
