Malabar Trogon

(Harpactes fasciatus)

The Malabar Trogon is a brilliantly coloured forest bird found in the dense evergreen and moist deciduous forests of the Indian subcontinent and Sri Lanka. The male is especially striking, with a slaty-black head and breast separated from the rich crimson underparts by a narrow white band, while the back and tail show warm chestnut and olive-brown tones. Females are more subdued, clothed in softer brown and ochre shades that blend well with the forest interior. Both sexes possess a bluish bill, pale blue feet, and long graduated tail feathers patterned with black and white. Usually seen perched quietly in the shaded mid-canopy, the species often remains motionless for long periods before gliding gracefully between trees. Its soft whistling calls and preference for deep forest make the Malabar Trogon a prized sighting among birdwatchers in Sri Lanka’s wet zone forests.
